On the fifth day of our Pre-Matriculation program, we talked to our students about the different characters discussed in the book You Got This, Kid! Words of Advice for Young Leaders. With each animal, there is a different connection, whether it be how their lives begin or the way they protect each other in different situations. Our speakers shared how these animals reflect different people in the workplace and how some behaviors connect to strong leadership qualities that you should possess.
Meet Our Speakers:

Chuck Saia is a co-founder of YGTK!, author of YOU GOT THIS, KID!: Words of Advice for Young Leaders, and a senior partner at Deloitte. Chuck is a philanthropist who focuses many efforts on lupus research.

Karin Wagner is the founder of Invigorate, a place that provides resources for those with autoimmune diseases. She herself has been battling lupus for 16 years and is a co-founder of YGTK!

Dr. Courtney McGinnis is a professor at Quinnipiac University, teaching Biology and Medical Sciences. She focuses on Anatomy and Physiology, is a trained toxicologist, and is a board member here at YGTK!
Scorpions:
Scorpions can be seen in the workplace as being cut-throat, often biting other peoples’ heads off, and often not being helpful. The students shared that it is common in Pre-Med to see people of this nature. They can be pessimistic about your dreams and aspirations and overall bring down the mood of a room when they enter. As scorpions eat their young, these people leave you to suffer with things and are unhelpful in team settings. This is not an animal that you want to reflect as a leader.

Eagles:
Dolphins:
Dogs:
The animals shared this week show a wide range of people in the workforce. We were able to interact with the students to highlight the traits to avoid or to embrace. Finding the right kind of people in your work environment can give you a sense of support and safety and catapult you into success. It is also highly important to be those dolphins and eagles for others as well.
